AMETEK Land Showcases Biomass Spontaneous Heating and Combustion Detection Technololgy at Pellet Fuels Conference

SHEFFIELD, UK - AMETEK Land, the leading specialist in the design and manufacture of monitors and analysers for industrial infrared temperature measurement, combustion efficiency and environmental pollutant emissions, will exhibit at the Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI) Annual Conference, July 23-25 in Stowe, Vermont, USA.

The conference highlights the various applications for densified biomass, as well as trends and best practices within the woody biomass industry. The conference attracts a broad range of individuals from the public and private sectors, academia, and local, state and national governments from North America and beyond.

“With their many desirable characteristics, biomass fuels, such as pellets, have a number of properties which make them difficult and potentially dangerous to store and transport; that is mainly because they are susceptible to spontaneous heating and combustion,” explains Derek Stuart, Global Product Manager – Power at AMETEK Land.

Spontaneous heating and combustion pose risks in any location that handles and processes biomass. Choosing the right detection method can significantly improve site safety by reducing fire risks. There are a number of techniques for detection of spontaneous heating and combustion, which allows the problem to be addressed in time to avoid a damaging and costly fire.

Among the options is AMETEK Land’s range of HotSpotIR line-scanning infrared pyrometers that use a single detector with a high-speed scanning mirror to make up to 1,000 discrete readings across the width of a conveyor. The movement of the conveyor allows the scanner software to build up a two-dimensional image of the material on the belt and show any hot spots associated with smouldering material.

In addition, AMETEK Land’s ARC Storage Pile Monitor provides an early warning system to prevent the onset of early stage combustion when biomass is stored in large piles. Advance warning of the potential for fire, through early detection of the build-up of carbon monoxide, can be managed very successfully via Land’s Millwatch Carbon Dioxide Detector; which is designed specifically to detect early-stage combustion in mills and pulverisers, and its Silowatch, for pellet silos.

AMETEK Land also offers instrument variants approved for use in hazardous area locations. All assist plant operators in maintaining high reliability and safety levels at industrial sites, as well as provide evidence of automated detection systems, if needed, in insurance situations.
